UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS CAMPUS, SCOTLAND, 2056

A while later – two weeks, or three hundred years, depending on your perspective – Clove woke up from a nap to see Ella sitting at her desk, eating a handful of pistachios as she pored over an old browning parchment.

“After everything that’s happened, I’d forgotten about the index,” Clove said, stretching in the sheets.

She felt like it had been a different person who had pulled off the complicated eighteenth-century robbery. She’d lived whole lifetimes since then, and undertaken time-travel journeys so complicated that she wasn’t sure she could explain them even if she wanted to. She hadn’t even known back in Carlisle that Ella was actually from the future, and secretly undercover, just like Clove had been.

The only constant throughout all her adventures had been Ella, with her never-ending optimism and good humour. That had never wavered, not in 1745 and not now in 2056.

She stood up, leaning over Ella’s shoulder to read her translations. Ella was still scribbling. She’d filled nearly an entire notebook with scrawled jottings in a bright green ink, the same colour as the scarf Clove had made for her. It was mostly illegible, but Clove just made out the sentences
